The Filipino spirit thrives wherever it goes, and Edmonton, Alberta, is no exception. One inspiring story is that of Joe Medina, a proud Filipino-Canadian who has made waves in the business and sports communities. His passion for basketball and commitment to fostering the Filipino community have made a lasting impact in Alberta.

A Journey of Hard Work and Dedication

Joe Medina’s journey in Canada began when he arrived as a 15-year-old from the Philippines. Facing the harsh winter of Edmonton for the first time was a shocking experience—one he vividly recalls when he walked home without gloves in freezing temperatures. But his resilience and determination helped him build a successful career in the automotive industry.

Starting as a lot attendant, Joe worked his way up through sheer dedication and perseverance. He took the bold step of transitioning into sales, even borrowing a suit and stapling the pant legs to the right length to make a good impression. His sincerity, hard work, and customer-first approach quickly propelled him to become a top salesperson.

Through the years, he climbed the ranks to become General Manager of Crosstown Auto Centre, where he led the dealership to become number one in Canada. In 1997, he secured a partnership in the business, and by 2006, he took on a Vice President role at Auto Canada, overseeing finance operations nationwide. Despite these achievements, Joe remains grounded, always remembering his roots and the support of the Filipino community.

Building a Basketball Legacy

Joe Medina has been deeply involved in the basketball community in Alberta for over 15 years. It all started with his sponsorship of the Filipino Sports Association (PSA), a league that grew to include over 1,500 Filipino athletes from Edmonton, Calgary, and even Saskatchewan. Seeing the league's growth and potential, Joe launched the Joe Medina Cup, an annual tournament that continues to expand each year.

What began as a small league turned into a full-scale tournament at the Edmonton Expo Center, drawing teams from across Alberta. With categories ranging from U15 teams to senior divisions, the tournament fosters sportsmanship and camaraderie within the Filipino community. Joe's goal is to ensure that young Filipino athletes receive the right support, training, and opportunities to develop their talents.

Giving Back and Empowering Others

For Joe, success isn’t just about financial gain—it’s about making a difference. His passion lies in mentoring and developing the next generation of business leaders and athletes. He takes pride in seeing fellow Filipinos grow in their careers, whether in the automotive industry or the sports arena.

“I'm not here to make a living anymore; I'm here to make a difference,” Joe emphasizes. His leadership has provided countless Filipinos with opportunities to succeed, and he continues to support initiatives that uplift the community.

A Community That Thrives Together

Filipinos are known for their strong sense of community, and Edmonton has become a hub for Filipino excellence. With a work ethic built on humility, patience, and perseverance, Filipino professionals and entrepreneurs are making their mark in Canada.

Whether through basketball tournaments or business mentorship, Joe Medina’s story is a testament to how passion, resilience, and a deep sense of community can lead to remarkable achievements. His journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and young Filipinos in Canada and beyond.

Joe’s message is simple: Whatever you do, do it with passion, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.
